On the night of 2 April 1968, the Virgin Mary appeared above the domes of the church dedicated to her in Zeitoun, Cairo. For many months, hundreds of thousands of people, Christians and Muslims, saw her clothed in light and accompanied by white doves. Pope Kyrillos VI officially recognised the apparition.
The artist gathers around her two great saints of Coptic Egypt: Pope Kyrillos VI (1902-1971), a man of prayer and miracles, patriarch at the time of the apparition, and Saint Samuel the Confessor (7th century), a monk who lost an eye under torture for defending the faith and founded the monastery of Kalamoun in the desert, around a church dedicated to the Virgin.
