'My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass me by. Nevertheless, let it be as you, not I, would have it.'

Gospel according to Saint Matthew 26:39

After the Last Supper, Jesus goes with his disciples to the garden of Gethsemane, at the foot of the Mount of Olives. He takes Peter, James and John a little further, asks them to stay awake with him, then goes on alone to pray, face to the ground. Three times he comes back and finds them asleep. Saint Luke reports that an angel from heaven appeared to strengthen him and that, in his anguish, his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood. This prayer opens the Passion: the Son freely accepts the Father's will for the salvation of the world.
