Archangel Gabriel announces that Mary will conceive Jesus, the Son of the Most High. Mary answers: “I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” The French ribbon recalls Luke 1:38. Kneeling, she freely welcomes the message and the Holy Spirit’s action.

Gabriel extends his hand towards her; the dove in the ray evokes the Spirit who will come upon her (Luke 1:35). The open book and lily belong to the traditional language of the Annunciation, not details explicitly given in Luke’s account.

Studio journal

From preparing the support to the final details: the usual stages of a hand-painted icon.

  1. Prepare the wood

The wooden support is prepared to receive the drawing, gold leaf and paint.

  2. Draw the composition

The scene, figures and symbols are arranged according to the chosen representation and size.

  3. Apply the gold leaf

Gilding brings light to the background and halos, in the tradition of the Coptic icon.

  4. Paint the icon

Colours, garments and faces are painted by hand. The level of detail is adapted to the size of the artwork.

  5. Finish and authenticate

The final details and finishing touches are completed. The artist signs the certificate bearing the artwork’s number and date.
