'Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.'
1 Samuel 3:10
Consecrated to the Lord by his mother Hannah, the young Samuel serves at the sanctuary of Shiloh beside the priest Eli. One night, as he lies in the Temple where the ark of God is, he hears a voice calling him by name. Three times he runs to Eli, thinking it is him. Eli then understands that it is the Lord and tells him to answer: 'Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.' Samuel will become the great prophet who anoints the kings Saul and David.
'It was rare for the Lord to speak in those days' (1 Samuel 3:1): the icon shows the moment when God reveals himself to a child with a docile heart, a model of listening to the word of God.
