'He had a dream: there was a ladder, planted on the ground with its top reaching to heaven; and God's angels were going up and down on it.'

Genesis 28:12

Fleeing the anger of his brother Esau, Jacob stops for the night on the road to Haran and falls asleep with his head on a stone. In a dream he sees the angels going up and down between heaven and earth, and the Lord renews to him the promise made to Abraham. On waking he cries out: 'How awe-inspiring this place is! This is nothing less than the abode of God, and this is the gate of heaven!' (Genesis 28:17), and he names the place Bethel.

Christ himself applies this vision to his own person: 'You will see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending over the Son of man' (John 1:51). Coptic hymns also see in it a figure of the Virgin Mary, who united heaven and earth by giving birth to the Son of God.
