Two registers connect the Cross with Easter victory: above, Jesus crucified between the two thieves; below, the living Christ descends into the realm of the dead and raises Adam, with Eve and the righteous. Broken gates underfoot proclaim the defeat of death. The great cross becomes the sign of victory.
This Resurrection image, called Anastasis, belongs to iconographic tradition. Scripture does not literally describe this scene with Adam and Eve; passages about proclamation to imprisoned spirits and victory over death illuminate its meaning.
