'Arise, Lord, to your resting place, you and the ark of your strength.'
Psalm 132 (131):8
The Coptic Church celebrates the departure of the Virgin Mary on 21 Tobi (29/30 January) and the assumption of her body on 16 Mesori (22 August), at the end of the Fast of the Virgin. According to tradition, the apostles were gathered around her bed in Jerusalem; Christ himself came to receive his Mother's soul, and her body was then taken up to heaven.
These accounts are not in the Bible, but the Church sees in them the fulfilment of the promise made to the faithful: 'Where I am you may be too' (John 14:3). Mary, the new ark of the covenant, is the first to enter the glory of the resurrection.
