Warned in a dream by an angel, Joseph takes the Child and his mother and flees into Egypt to escape Herod. The Holy Family stays there until the king's death, fulfilling the prophet's word: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”

For the Coptic Church this sojourn is a unique blessing: Egypt is the land that welcomed the Lord as a child. Armia Elkatcha places the Holy Family at the heart of a great medallion, before the pyramids, and surrounds it with the stages of the journey as Coptic tradition has remembered them, up to the dream announcing the return.
