'The Israelites went on dry ground right into the sea, with walls of water to right and left of them.'
Exodus 14:22
Pursued by Pharaoh's army, the Hebrews who had come out of Egypt are trapped against the sea. Moses stretches out his staff and the Lord opens a way through the waters. The people pass over, then the waters close on the Egyptian chariots. On the far shore Miriam the prophetess, Aaron's sister, takes up a tambourine and all the women follow her singing: 'Sing of the Lord, for he has covered himself in glory' (Exodus 15:20-21).
Saint Paul sees in this crossing a figure of baptism (1 Corinthians 10:1-2). The Song of Moses is sung every day in the Coptic Tasbeha as the First Hoos.
