After the feeding of the multitude, Jesus approaches his disciples walking on the sea. Peter asks to come to him on the water. He leaves the boat, but, noticing the strong wind, becomes afraid and begins to sink: 'Lord, save me!' Jesus immediately reaches out his hand and takes hold of him. When they enter the boat, the wind ceases and the disciples confess: 'Truly you are the Son of God!'
The icon brings together Christ's walk, Peter's cry and the gesture that raises him. It expresses fragile faith welcomed by Christ: salvation rests not on the disciple's confidence but on the presence of the Lord.
Main reference: Matthew 14:22-33, especially verses 28-31. Mark 6:45-52 and John 6:16-21 recount Jesus walking on the sea without Peter's episode.
