'Abel for his part brought the first-born of his flock and some of their fat as well. The Lord looked with favour on Abel and his offering. But he did not look with favour on Cain and his offering.'
Genesis 4:4-5
Cain, the farmer, and Abel, the shepherd, are the two sons of Adam and Eve. Each brings an offering to God: Cain the fruits of the earth, Abel the first-born of his flock. God accepts Abel's offering, made in faith, but not Cain's. Out of jealousy, Cain leads his brother into the fields and kills him. 'Listen! Your brother's blood is crying out to me from the ground,' the Lord tells him. Abel the righteous is the first martyr of Scripture. The Church sees in him a figure of Christ, the good Shepherd and innocent Lamb put to death, whose blood 'pleads more insistently than Abel's'.
