'Do not raise your hand against the boy! Do not harm him! For now I know you fear God.'
Genesis 22:12
God puts Abraham to the test by asking him to offer his only son Isaac on a mountain in the land of Moriah. Abraham obeys: he sets out with the boy, who carries the wood for the sacrifice. When Isaac asks where the lamb is, his father answers: 'My son, God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering' (Genesis 22:8). As Abraham raises the knife, the angel of the Lord stops him, and a ram caught in a bush is offered in Isaac's place.
The Fathers see in Isaac carrying the wood a figure of Christ carrying his cross, and in the ram the Lamb offered for the salvation of the world: 'God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son' (John 3:16; see also Hebrews 11:17-19).
