'I now set my bow in the clouds and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.'
Genesis 9:13
After the flood the ark has come to rest on the mountains of Ararat. Noah releases a dove, which comes back in the evening with an olive leaf in its beak: the waters have gone down (Genesis 8:11). God then tells Noah to come out of the ark with his wife, his sons Shem, Ham and Japheth and their wives, and all the animals. He makes with them and with all creation an everlasting covenant, whose sign is the rainbow.
Saint Peter sees in the ark, which saved eight people through water, a figure of baptism (1 Peter 3:20-21); the Fathers see in it an image of the Church, which welcomes humanity to save it.
