Saint Athanasius the Apostolic, 20th Patriarch of Alexandria (c. 296-373), defender of the faith of Nicaea against Arius, is seated on the throne of Saint Mark. He is writing the Life of Saint Antony, the father of monks, whom he had known and whose disciple he was. The scroll bears in Arabic the opening of the last chapter: “This is the end of the life of Antony in the body”. Above is what he narrates: Saint Antony, who died in 356 aged over a hundred, is welcomed and embraced by Christ in glory, among the angels. Written around 357, this book made Egyptian monastic life known throughout the Christian world.
