'When you give alms, your left hand must not know what your right is doing; your almsgiving must be secret, and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.'
Gospel according to Saint Matthew 6:3-4
Saint Nicholas was bishop of Myra, in Lycia (in the south of present-day Turkey), in the 4th century. Born in Patara into a wealthy Christian family, he gave his goods to the poor. Tradition tells that he secretly threw three purses of gold, at night, into the house of a ruined man to provide dowries for his three daughters and save them from poverty. It also presents him as the protector of sailors, whom he is said to have saved from a storm by his prayer, and as a defender of the faith of Nicaea. He died around the middle of the 4th century. Venerated in all the Churches, he is celebrated by the Coptic Church on 10 Koiak (19 December).
