'You are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of Heaven.'

Matthew 16:18-19

The two apostles are celebrated together by the Coptic Church on 5 Epip (12 July), at the end of the Apostles' Fast. Peter, the fisherman of Galilee, received from Christ the charge of feeding his flock (John 21:15-17); Paul, the persecutor who became apostle to the nations (Acts 9), carried the Gospel to the ends of the Roman world and wrote many epistles. According to tradition, both received the crown of martyrdom in Rome under Nero.

Together they hold the Church they built by their preaching and sealed with their blood. Paul writes: 'I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. All there is to come for me now is the crown of uprightness' (2 Timothy 4:7-8).
