The Coptic inscription at the foot of the icon names him: Apa Simeon pirem Khmim, “abba Simeon, the man of Akhmim”. Akhmim, ancient Panopolis in Upper Egypt, was one of the great centres of Coptic monasticism. Standing in the black monastic habit, Saint Simeon holds the hand cross and shows the open Gospel, where the painter placed Christ's promise to his disciples: “Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you.”
Gospel of Luke 10:19; see also Mark 16:17-18; Ephesians 6:10-17.
