Description

After they had left, suddenly the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, 'Get up, take the child and his mother with you, and escape into Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, because Herod intends to search for the child and do away with him.' So Joseph got up and, taking the child and his mother with him, left that night for Egypt, where he stayed until Herod was dead. This was to fulfil what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: I called my son out of Egypt.

Gospel according to Saint Matthew

  • The staff of Saint Joseph. Saint Joseph is depicted sleeping while holding a walking stick made of hazelwood. Tradition holds that this stick was used by him during the flight to Egypt; it was originally a reed, but demons and witches who sought to take the child Jesus broke it. So Saint Joseph grabbed a hazelwood stick that terrified them.
  • The clothes of the angel of God. The angel who appears to Joseph is dressed according to Coptic liturgical tradition in a plain decorated loincloth inspired by ancient Egypt and the ritual scarf of cross-shaped cantors, readers, and deacons, a sign of the appearance of a simple angel and not an archangel. He is crowned with a matching headpiece with a diamond. The crown symbolizes the halo of angels and the diamond symbolizes purity.
  • The landscape in the background. The landscape in the background of the icon represents Joseph's dream itself. Plunged into sleep, we can see the Egyptian sand crossed by the waters of the Nile bounded by vegetation and the source of the powerful ancient civilization. The temple, obelisk, and pyramids remind us that Coptic Egypt is the heir of the great Pharaoh civilization still alive at the time of Jesus Christ's visit.
  • The miracle of the Egyptian desert. The Nile has fertilized an arid and desert land. From this miracle, one of the greatest civilizations in all of human history was born. This blessing for Egypt is as great as that of the visit of our Lord Jesus Christ, and so it is naturally that the vegetation of the Nile is imprinted in the background of the whole icon and flourishes around the Virgin Mary carrying the child Jesus.
  • The boat of the Holy Family. The traditional Egyptian boat on which the Holy Family sails on the Nile represents the journey made throughout Egypt for years. Christ is deliberately older in the middle of his Mother and Saint Joseph to mark the passage of time.
  • The Virgin Mary holding the child Jesus. The Virgin Mary stands to the right of Christ and is dressed in traditional Coptic attire. She has a gold and ocher head covering as befits ancient nobility. It is covered with her garment adorned with three crosses, a symbol of the Holy Trinity and her purity. Christ is swaddled to remind us that he is still a newborn when the angel announces their hurried departure to Joseph.
